Daki-Myoga Karigane sukashi-zu Tsuba, mumei ko-Akasaka

Early Edo period, Musashi no Kuni Edo
Iron ground, chrysanthemum flower round shape
Kebori, open work, rounded rim
Length; 83.6 mm
Width; 82.5 mm
Thickness at seppadai; 5.6 mm
Thickness at mimi; 5.0 mm

The iron ground, which was made as a rather large sized chrysanthemum flower and in the maru or round shape, has an activity on its surface, hammer marks from forging that is known as tuschime. The tsuba has deep black color and the restful luster of lacquer work though it is not lacquered. It's age (Ko Akasaka) is apparant because of the shape of the seppa dai which was made longer in length. The motif includes Karigane (Šๅ‹เ), Myoga (ไช‰ื; Japanese ginger), Ougi (๎; folding fan), Chasen (’ƒโค), and so on. And each of them is an elegant element of classic designs. They are carved in slight relief with simple Kibori (line carving) added. The way also suggests its older age. It is a work which you can appreciate the mood of its practical use.
